The Ten Commandments start a section of Exodus that is all about the laws of Israel. However, these laws can sometimes be hard to understand. Learn how to better read Old Testament law from The Evangelical Study Bible

Understanding the Old Testament laws rightly helps us better grasp God’s compassionate character. However, reading these laws can be challenging because we are so far removed from ancient Israel’s culture. These reading tips are designed to assist with understanding Israel’s social and ethical laws.

  1. The law codes were neither exhaustive nor intended to be exhaustive but were written as case laws.
  2. The law codes were directed to the stronger party with the design to protect the weaker, more vulnerable party; this helps explain the focus on the head of the house.
  3. The law codes were designed to help Israelite society, particularly the judges and elders to practice justice.
  4. The law codes tended to give the main case first, followed by countercases or complications.
