What does the Bible say about fathers?

Fathers are…

Fathers are natural leaders.

“of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.” Romans 9:5

Fathers are the head of households.

“These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. These are the families of Reuben.” Exodus 6:14

Fathers are ancestors.

“But they said, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever.” Jeremiah 35:6

Fathers should…

Fathers should love.

“But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him.” Genesis 37:4

Fathers should instruct.

“My son, hear the instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law of your mother;” Proverbs 1:8

Fathers should nourish.

“Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth!
For the Lord has spoken:
“I have nourished and brought up children,
And they have rebelled against Me;” Isaiah 1:2

Fathers should supply needs.

“For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:8-11

Fathers should guide and warn.

“as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children” 1 Thessalonians 2:11

Fathers should restrain.

“In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows, because his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them.” 1 Samuel 3:12-13

Fathers are an example…

Fathers are an example of our Creator.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”

Fathers are an example of superiority.

“And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.” 2 Kings 2:12

Fathers are an example of a counselor.

“So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.” Genesis 45:8
