How should we handle unmet expectations? When we feel disappointed by God, our leaders, or family members, it is tempting to become disillusioned and weary.
Malachi spoke to the disillusioned postexilic Jews who doubted God’s love; they had grown tired of His covenant requirements and seemingly unfulfilled promises. Times were hard, and the people faced economic challenges and failed crops as they lived in a tiny, insignificant province. They concluded that serving God and remaining faithful to His covenant and one another were useless.
Yet God kept His covenant. He faithfully loved His people even when they neglected and disobeyed Him; therefore He warned them. He presented five questions that revealed the people of Israel’s careless worship, poor attitude, and covenant failure. These were a wake-up call to renewed loyalty and love for God, their Father and Master. God, in His everlasting love, never let go of His people, but the people had let go of Him.
In the end God would destroy the proud through a purifying fire and renew those who honored Him. In an expectant tone, the Lord promised mending for the wounds of the devoted ones and the restoration of justice.
