What does the Bible say about grace?

January 8, 2025
By: The Open Bible

The grace of God is the expression of His goodness toward the undeserving. Grace means unmerited favor and can be expressed by the acrostic “God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.” This grace is the basis of our salvation (Ephesians 1:7 and 2:8).

In salvation, men who deserve hell obtain heaven. This cannot be explained apart from God’s grace. Every conversion in Scripture is an example of God’s grace. When Paul met the Lord on the road to Damascus, Paul was a persecutor of the church. Yet God made him one of the church’s chief preachers.

We need to remember that we are saved, given the Holy Spirt, and allowed to serve God – by His grace.

From the Evangelical Study Bible

Grace Is…

Grace is all-abundant and all-sufficient.

“For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:17

“And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Grace is glorious and great.

“to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved.” Ephesians 1:6

“And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.” Acts 4:33

Grace is an undeserved gift from God.

“And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life.” 1 Timothy 1:14-16

“But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.” Romans 5:15

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God” Ephesians 2:8

Grace is the Source of…

Grace is the source of salvation and eternal life.

“But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” Acts 5:11

“Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;” 1 Peter 1:13

“being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,” Romans 3:24

Grace is the source of faith.

“And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace” Acts 18:27

Grace is a picture of God’s…

Grace is descriptive of God’s favor.

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:8

Grace is descriptive of God’s forgiving mercy.

“And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” Romans 11:6

“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:17
