CamPAIN Relief to Start After Political Conventions End

With the end of the political conventions comes the official start of the 2012 US presidential campaign season, prompting feelings of angst among beleaguered citizens. According to Gallup research, 75% of swing state voters and 70% of all voters already can’t wait for the election to be over. People say the divisive nature of increasingly negative political rhetoric produces feelings of anxiety, frustration, and confusion.

A separate campaign has begun online that offers reassuring daily solace in the form of specially selected Bible verses paired with stunning, original nature photographs –available by email through election day. UPWORD 2012 (#UPWORD2012) (http://SeeGodsWordinAction.com/UPWORD2012) is sponsored by God’s Word In Action (@GodsWordnAction), the charitable giving program of Thomas Nelson Bibles (@NelsonBibles).

“Our UPWORD 2012 campaign offers anti-anxiety meditation in the form of daily Bible verses of assurance during this potentially discordant time in America,” says Blake Aldridge, senior director of marketing. “Our hope is that, through these verses and beautiful nature photos, people will remember God is ultimately in control.”

Visitors to the UPWORD 2012 website will engage with a PowerPoint® presentation consisting of vivid, original color photography of serene nature scenes combined with Scripture verses from the new Bible translation The Voice, as well as the New King James Version and King James Version. The presentation is capable of being embedded on other blogs and websites. Other available free resources include The Voice New Testament, The Expanded Bible New Testament, the Gospel of John from The Word of Promise Audio Bible, computer screensavers and wallpaper, blogger badges, an email subscription service for automatic reception of UPWORD 2012 in email inboxes, a YouTube video of the presentation to share with others, and a mobile app.

“We invite bloggers, Pinterest pinners, and everyone to broadly share these encouraging and inspiring verses leading up to the election,” says Aldridge.

The goal of God’s Word In Action is to help eradicate global and domestic poverty by inviting people to change a child’s life forever through child sponsorship or a donation to child and family health.

God’s Word in Action Ministry Bible Surpasses Seven Million Copies Distributed

Ministry Bible Continues Finding Its Way to Those in Need

Thomas Nelson, Inc. announced today that more than seven million copies of the God’s Word in Action Ministry Bible have been distributed worldwide.

First published in 2005, the God’s Word in Action Ministry Bible was designed as a resource for ministries.  The idea behind the Bible was to provide an affordable resource churches as well as individuals could give away.

“When it was first published we hoped to distribute one million copies,” said Gary Davidson, sr. vice president and Thomas Nelson Bible group publisher.  “In fact, we originally called it the Million Bible Challenge Bible.  To see it now have more than seven million copies distributed confirms that we are helping spread His Word.”

Available in case lots as well as individual copies at book stores, the Bible is priced at $2.99 and often is sold for only $1.00.  The widespread availability and affordable price has aided this Bible in finding its way into the hands of people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to experience God’s Word.  From small villages in Africa and South America to use in prison ministries the God’s Word in Action Ministry Bible has helped to change lives.

“The God’s Word in Action Ministry Bible serves the core of why our Christian retail partners exist,” said Tom Knight, sr. vice president of Thomas Nelson sales.  “It is a resource that helps them achieve their mission and equip the churches in their communities to achieve theirs.”

Headline-making New Bible Translation The Voice

Scholars, Authors, Poets and Musicians Collaborate to Capture Poetry and Relevance of Scripture for Today’s Readers

The new Bible translation The Voice, completed this year after seven years of work, is the result of a unique collaboration among scholars, pastors, authors, poets, musicians, and other artists. The 120-member team strove to translate each word of Scripture into a story that is faithful to the original text, easier to understand today, and yet conveys the beauty and timelessness of Scripture. The Voice is published by Thomas Nelson, Inc., the world’s largest Christian publisher.

The Voice has already made headlines for replacing some familiar terms. Frank Couch, vice president of translation development at Thomas Nelson, explains: “Certain words such as ‘Christ,’ ‘angel,’ and ‘apostle’ that other versions have transliterated from the Greek are now rendered into English. By translating these words the text is easier to understand and the nuances of the original language can be expressed in the resulting translation.”

Couch adds that most translations follow the Latin Vulgate and read “Jesus Christ,” which is so familiar that people have lost sight of the fact that “Christ” is a title, not a name. “Christ” comes from a Greek word that means “anointed” or “chosen by God.” Thus, in The Voice Jesus is called “the Anointed One” and in a limited number of places it adds “The Liberating King” to make the meaning clear.

This is just one example of the unique approach to translation that makes The Voice different from the numerous versions of Scripture available today. The team describes it as “dynamic translation,” which attempts to capture the unique literary quality of each book of the Bible.

The Voice does not try to shoehorn the magnificent diversity of styles and genres—law,  wisdom, poetry, letters, and prophecy, to name a few—found in the Bible into one homogenous whole. “Part of what makes the Bible so significant is that all of these different literary styles are combined in one Scripture,” says Chris Seay, pastor of Ecclesia Church in Houston, and a member of the translation team. “It’s the diversity of the Bible that makes it so beautiful.”

Another innovation is that dialogue is written in screenplay format. Speakers are always identified, with spoken words indented from the rest of the text, so that readers can easily follow the story. The hope of The Voice team is that this will not only help people engage with the biblical narrative, but also encourage them to read it aloud, perhaps with others. The translators took great care to consider “how the words sound to the ear, not just how they read to the eye,” says Seay.

The Voice captures the poetic imagery and literary artistry of the original in a way that is beautiful and meaningful. This was accomplished by a team that combined the complementary strengths of biblical scholars and translators who know the original languages (Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic), with the talents of writers, poets and musicians who are skilled in the English language. Yet The Voice eschews slang or trendy language; rather it seeks to “capture the beauty and brutal honesty of Scripture with timeless and enduring language.” Nor does the new translation employ gender-neutral or inclusive language. This was not a political decision, says Dr. David Capes, Thomas Nelson research professor at Houston Baptist University and lead scholar on the project. Rather it's a result of the translators’ desire “to follow the sense of the text, making decisions based on the context.”

The Voice is unlike any other Bible translation available,” says Dr. Capes. “Making the Bible more understandable and relevant for today’s Christian while maintaining accuracy from the original Greek and Hebrew biblical texts was the challenge before us. Everyone who worked on the project had the same goal of creating a translation to help share God’s Word.” Chris Seay adds that the entire team felt working on The Voice was “a sacred calling.”

The translation and editorial teams hope The Voice will be a unifying force for the church in a divided age: “Any literary project reflects the age in which it is written. The Voice is created for and by a church in great transition,” the translation team writes in the preface. “Instead of widening the division between culture and theology, it is time to bring the body of Christ together again around the Bible.”

Company Receives Honor For “God’s Word In Action” Program with World Vision.

For the past year, Thomas Nelson, Inc. has engaged with God’s Word to aid children worldwide. Through the “God’s Word in Action” program a portion of profits from Thomas Nelson Bible sales is given to World Vision to help end poverty and preventable deaths among children.  This year, in honor of the “God’s Word in Action’s” efforts, the Premier Foundation and the Association of Christian Retail (CBA) will honor Thomas Nelson as the Christian vendor recipient for the 2012 Champions of Faith Award.

At the second annual Champions of Faith Awards and Benefit Concert taking place on July 14, 2012, the “unique event honors businesses, organizations, entertainers, individuals and Christian retailers and vendors who are ‘Champions’ of the Christian faith, and live their lives dedicated to the principles taught by Jesus Christ,” according to the website (www.championsofthefaith.com).  Grounded by the Biblical passage found in Colossians 1:10, these awards are meant to inspire those who attend the benefit concert, “to live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way,” just as the honorees have done.

In “God’s Word in Action’s” first year, Thomas Nelson contributed more than $112,000 to World Vision’s effort through a guaranteed minimum contribution of $75,000 plus additional support based on revenues through Bible sales. World Vision increased this contribution, through matching funds, into more than $500,000.  The result was aid provided to more than 24,000 children.  Just recently announced, Thomas Nelson renewed the program with a dedication to give a minimum of $100,000 by April 2013.

“We are honored to be recognized by the Christian industry in such a way,” said Gary Davidson, sr. vice president and Bible group publisher.  “The impact the God’s Word in Action program has made and the continued support of World Vision is truly a blessing for us to be a part of.”  Davidson will be accepting the award on behalf of Thomas Nelson at the banquet.

This is the first time that Thomas Nelson has received this honor.

In total, 230 exclusive devotionals were penned by Homecoming artists along with 20 original poems by Gloria Gaither. A custom Gaither Homecoming Bible reading plan has also been crafted which will guide readers on a Homecoming journey through the scriptures.

“It is our hope that the stories and experiences we and the Homecoming family of singers, writers and musicians share will encourage and inspire others to find the Word of God to be a living, vital force in our real, walking-around lives,” explain Bill and Gloria Gaither.  “But most of all, we hope a developing love for the Scriptures will lead those who read it to the One who is the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

“We couldn’t be happier or more excited to partner with Bill and Gloria for The Gaither Homecoming Bible,” says Gary Davidson, Senior Vice-President and Bible Group Publisher, Thomas Nelson.  “The impact their songs and Homecoming Events have made on people’s lives aligns with what we hope our products provide – hope, truth and inspiration. We look forward to a long relationship with the Gaithers and pray this Bible blesses millions of people worldwide.”

Nearly 120 individual scholars, musicians, artists, poets, and authors contributed to “The Voice” translation creating a timeless narrative of God’s Word. “’The Voice” would have been insurmountable if not for these God-inspired individuals,” said Gary Davidson, senior vice president and group publisher for Thomas Nelson’s Bible division.  “They all entered in to God’s story with their hearts, souls and minds to create a translation that will truly live out the Thomas Nelson mission, to inspire the world.”

Originally intended to provide the average reader, who might have limited experience with church, a new way to connect with God; this new translation has rapidly gained attention from both new and seasoned Bible readers and is receiving an overwhelming positive reception.  Not only is “The Voice” reaching the average individual, but it is also connecting with active Christians who have been in church their entire lives.  “I LOVE it,” said Pete Wilson, author and senior pastor at Crosspoint Church in Nashville, TN. “’The Voice’ is the first translation that has made me audibly say ‘Wow’.  It’s fresh, enlightening, and extremely accurate.”

With dialogue written in a screenplay format, “The Voice” helps readers better understand the narrative of the Bible, allowing them to easily engage in God’s rich story.

“What has been done with ‘The Voice’ is unlike any other Bible translation available,” said Dr. David Capes, Thomas Nelson research professor at Houston Baptist University and lead scholar on the project.  “Making the Bible more understandable and relevant for today’s Christian while maintaining accuracy from the original Greek and Hebrew biblical texts was a challenge that we all hoped to overcome.  Everyone who worked on the project had the same goal of creating a translation to help share God’s Word.”

“’The Voice Revised New Testament’ was released in October 2011 and we were excited to see the impact that it was able to have on believers and non-believers alike,” said Frank Couch, vice president of translation development at Thomas Nelson.  “With the full Bible we hope to continue to see people use it to strengthen their Christian walk and to ultimately grow the Kingdom.”
